Uber Brings Its SelfDriving Cars To San Francisco

first_img Uber has always had a big presence in San Francisco, so it makes sense that the big brand should be bringing the hottest tech trend to the city. Uber’s self-driving car service will now be available here. Rejoice, ride-takers and those needing to get from point A to point B without fear of having to talk to your driver! It’s also the debut of the XC90 self-driving car! This is a smart Volvo with lidar, a radar that’s based on laser beams and wireless technology. It’s all thanks to Uber’s Advanced Technologies Center, the research facility that’s responsible for bringing all of this to life after Uber introduced self-driving cars to Pittsburgh earlier this year. This is all part of Uber’s bid to keep rolling out and bettering driverless technology, which the company is hoping to utilize in cars like the Ford Fusion and XC90 eventually. It’s currently in a race to get this done as soon as possible to beat its rival companies to the punch since this absolutely going to be a Thing with a capital T going forward as the future keeps getting weirder and more real as the days pass.Of course, as The New York Times points out, it’s not immediately apparent if the driverless cars are indeed allowed in San Francisco when speaking with the California D.M.V., since autonomous vehicles are technically those “without the active physical control or monitoring of a natural person.” Uber contends with the fact that its self-driving cars require drivers for surveillance and control, so they’re not the same thing. If you’re in San Francisco and hail Ubers pretty often, this might well be a thing going forward. Who knows if it will be a permanent institution, but it sure is cool even if it’s temporary.
