Kruger International arrives

first_img4 March 2004Mpumalanga’s R320-million Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) is preparing to launch its first scheduled international flights, a year after being awarded its international licence.KMIA marketing manager Irvin Phenyane said this week that KMIA had short-listed two charter airlines to operate regular scheduled flights to three medium-haul destinations in neighbouring Mozambique.Pelican Air will fly to the popular tourist destination of Vilanculos in central Mozambique, while Charlan Air has been short-listed for routes serving the tourist centre of Inhambane and Mozambique’s second city of Beira.“We expect the first regional flights to begin on 1 April – exactly one year after we won our international licence”, Phenyane said, adding that additional routes to Zambia’s tourism capital, Livingstone, would be announced later this month. However, no carriers have expressed an interest in shorter-haul international destinations to the Mozambican capital, Maputo, or neighbouring Swaziland’s capital, Mbabane.“No one is really interested in developing the Maputo or Swaziland routes, because they claim they’re too short to be profitable”, Phenyane said. “Why fly when you can drive there in two hours? Relatively low passenger volumes and the high price of tickets also remains an issue.”A return Nelspruit-to-Cape Town economy class ticket currently costs upwards of R4 200, while a similar Johannesburg-to-Cape Town ticket on a budget airline costs in the region of R800.“Ticket prices are something airports have no real control over”, Phenyane said.Phenyane said that the airport was averaging 12 000 passengers per month, or 144 000 per year, in its second year of operation.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Trouble on the Roof

first_imgOur expert’s point of viewHere’s how GBA technical director Peter Yost looks at it:Having investigated a number of SIP roof moisture problems, rule number one is to back up every panel joint that is foam-sealed with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape. Over time, even the best of foam sealants can develop hairline cracks with repeated contraction and expansion. The flexible PSA tape maintains the air barrier should the joint sealant fail. And because of wintertime stack effect, even the smallest of cracks at the roof line lead to warm moist air leaking into the panel joint and condensing. So, all SIP joints need to be sealed and taped to be part of a longterm continuous air barrier system. The need for this is greatest in the roof system, typically, because it goes through the most dramatic temperature and expansion-contraction cycles. In this case, I am afraid that the roofing panels need to be removed so that all of the SIP joints can be taped. Leakage may be most pronounced at the ridge, but sooner or later, you will almost certainly be needing that flexible backup PSA tape at all panel joints. And yes, the SIP installer is liable here, to the extent that best practice is belt-and-suspenders at panel joints.Rule number two: check the building pressure balance with the HVAC running. You need to know whether the HVAC system is making matters worse.Rule number three: check to see if your HVAC system is both properly sized and has the climate-appropriate Sensible Heat Ratio (SHR). An oversized AC unit could be short-cycling and not accomplishing enough latent heat (moisture) removal, aiding and abetting condensation at your interior roof finish. And a unit with the proper SHR means the AC unit is designed to “favor” latent heat or moisture removal in hot-humid climates. An SHR no greater than 0.70 makes sense in Kentucky. Jeremy Ballard is living in a relatively new home built with structural insulated panels (SIPs), and he’s already spotted something that’s keeping him up at night. The weather in Kentucky is turning hot and humid, and with the humidity has come condensation on corrugated metal panels installed on the interior of the roof.“Our center ceiling beams are dripping wet throughout the day, causing small puddles on the floor,” Ballard writes in a post in the Q&A forum at GreenBuildingAdvisor. “The ceiling is hot to the touch at the very peak on either side of the center beam. I believe hot outside air is leaking in.”As he starts a round of calls to his builder, the SIP manufacturer, and the manufacturer that provided the frame, Ballard looks for recommendations on how the problem can be corrected. Seams between SIPs are not taped, either on the inside or the outside, and they’re now inaccessible. Other possible clues: the unvented metal roofing is installed over furring strips and a layer of “double bubble,” a foil-faced product sold as insulation.Another question faced by Ballard: Who’s responsible for making it right? Among the candidates are the general contractor for the house, the manufacturer of the SIPs, and possibly himself.“I couldn’t sleep last night thinking how this cost our family over $32,000 for the SIPs and the first summer [they] are failing,” Ballard says. That’s the topic for this Q&A Spotlight. Suspect seals at the ridgeBallard can add some visual evidence that air leaks at the ridge are behind the problem. He provides a photo taken during construction showing a gap of at least an inch between SIPs at the ridge, with a bit of gasket material showing (see Image #2, below).“I was ignorant during construction, but realized this was not right,” he says. “I sent the picture to the manufacturer a year ago when it occurred and the response was that my concerns were not valid. I poorly chose to rely on the professional opinion. However, the evidence now is that my concerns are valid.”Ballard doesn’t quibble with any of the comments that have been posted, but the real question is how to fix it. He thinks a possible solution is to seal the entire ridge from the inside and “basically build the ceiling down below some sort of added seal and barrier.”Following that, he adds, the ridge should come off and the seam sealed from that side as well.“I have no idea what could seal it, but I wouldn’t be opposed to a solution of adding up to a couple of inches to the inside if it assured a bullet-proof seal,” he says.Start at the ridge, says GBA senior editor Martin Holladay, by removing the ridge flashing. “If the removal of the ridge flashing exposes enough of the SIPs on both sides of the ridge to install SIP tape,” Hollladay says, “then the fix would involve spraying the gap between the SIPs with spray foam; trimming the foam after it cures; and then installing SIP tape that is wide enough to stretch from the SIP on one side of the roof, over the ridge, and onto the SIP on the other side of the roof.”If removing the ridge flashing does not expose enough of the SIPs to do this work, the builder will have to remove enough of the roofing screws to lift or remove the roofing panels, “as needed to gain access to the ridge area.”And while this work is underway, Ballard might think about hiring a home performance contractor to find out why the house is depressurized in relation to the outside, a condition which is encouraging the influx of warm, moist air. The builder might be able to expose enough of the roof to correct the leaks by removing the ridge cap, but that prospect seems unlikely because in an unvented roof the metal roofing would extend very close to the ridge. “But perhaps,” he adds, “the ridge cap is large enough to allow some wiggle room up there.”He also suggests that a home performance contractor equipped with a blower door and an infrared camera might be able to identify other air leaks in the house. A good home performance contractor might also help determine whether the HVAC system is depressurizing the house and contributing to the problem.Exposing the ridge might also reveal the “other side of this coin,” writes Andy Chappell-Dick: “warm, moist air leaking out in the winter.”Everyone in the SIP business, from manufacturer to installer, knows the importance of a “belt-and-suspenders” approach to air sealing, he adds. “Due to the high pressures of winter stack effect, the most critical interior joint to seal is the peak, that one that is now inaccessible,” Chappell-Dick says. Yes, air leaks are the culpritDavid Meiland has no doubt the problem is a leaky roof assembly. “As you allude to, the issue is probably air leakage and the solution is to seal the joints where air is leaking in,” he writes. If the builder responds to Ballard’s requests for help, Meiland adds, he will probably want to correct the problem from inside the house by caulking the seam on either side of the ridge beam. But the real solution is elsewhere: on the outside of the house, where the seams between adjoining SIPs should be sealed with tape. Structural Insulated Panelscenter_img RELATED ARTICLES CONSTRUCTION DETAILS And who’s responsible for this mess? There seems to be some consensus on how to fix the problem (tackle it from the outside, not the inside), but now it gets a little sticky. Who is legally responsible for the repairs?Ballard had a general contractor/builder for the house, but he hired a SIP installation crew under a separate contract. To be precise, he says, he paid the SIP manufacturer, paid their installation crew, and then paid his GC to come in and finish the roof with flashing and trim. “In my mind,” he says, “the SIP install contractor is the person I need to be talking to.”That makes you the GC for the SIPs, says Holladay, adding, “It’s up to you to pursue the problem with the crew that you paid.”Stephen Sheehy, who practiced construction law, suggests that Ballard invite both the general contractor and the SIP contractor to the house for a chat.“Otherwise, it is highly likely that the SIP contractor will blame the GC and the GC will blame the SIP contractor,” he writes. “You need to emphasize that they have a problem and you need it fixed by either or both of them. I’d copy my lawyer on any correspondence.“One lesson you’ve learned the hard way is that there is significant risk in carving out a part of the construction of the building envelope and hiring a sub yourself,” Sheehy continues. “While the SIP installer may very well have screwed up, maybe the GC made matters worse. Maybe the GC should have noticed the problem before the roofing went on. But does the GC have an obligation to inspect work by subs hired directly by you? Probably not.” Green Basics: Structural Insulated PanelsHow to Protect Structural Insulated Panels from Decay Air-Sealing SIP Seams Q&A: How to Protect Structural Insulated Panels from DecayQ&A: SIPs RidgingStay Away from Foil-Faced Bubble Wraplast_img read more

(Photo by Leon Halip/Getty Images)Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers is a crazy athlete, and may wind up as one of the best corners in the country if he pans out, based on his potential entering college last year. He proved that the injury issues that kept him from participating during most of the 2014 season are probably a thing of the past with this impressive backflip during drills yesterday. Fellow Michigan cornerback Blake Countess isn’t one to be overshadowed, however, and one-upped Peppers’ backflip with this wild routine, which he posted on Twitter this evening.Yall decide! its all fun tho! @JabrillPeppers pic.twitter.com/LGy4nhwQI8— Blake Countess (@TheeCount2) February 27, 2015Peppers is impressed…we think. Several worthy players hung around the race for large portions of the season, including Paul George and Nikola Jokic. But in the end, there were two: Giannis Antetokounmpo and James Harden — each of whom has several arguments working in his favor.Antetokounmpo is the best player on the best team1By record, at least. in the league, and he led the 60-win Bucks to the best defense and fourth-best offense in the NBA. He averaged an unheard of 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. He is also one of the best defenders in the league — a top-tier candidate for Defensive Player of the Year.Harden, meanwhile, carried an offensive burden unlike any in modern NBA history. His 40.5 percent usage rate is the second-highest of all time. He finished the season averaging 36.1 points per game, eighth-most in league history and the most since Michael Jordan ticked off 37.1 per game in 1987. Harden boosted his deep attempts far beyond what previously seemed either possible or reasonable, taking 13.2 triples per game and connecting on them at a 37 percent rate.2He made 378 shots from beyond the arc, second only to only 2016 Stephen Curry in NBA history.Really, though, the argument between the two players is less about who had the better season and more about the definition of “valuable.” Is it just the best player in the league? Is it the best player on the best team? Is it the player whose performance was most outstanding, whatever you decide that means? Is it the player whose team needs him the most? Is it some combination of all of those things, as well as a few others? Different players, coaches, executives, fans and media members have different definitions. What if we took the word “valuable” as literally as possible, though, and tried to identify the player who provided his team with the greatest bang for its buck throughout this season? After all, what’s more valuable than performing at a level that far outstrips your salary, allowing your team to spend those surplus dollars on more talent elsewhere? The first step to answering this question is to quantify the dollar value of a win in the NBA. There were 1,230 games played this season, which means there were 1,230 wins up for grabs. According to Basketball-Reference.com, NBA teams handed out more than $3.6 billion in salary this year. Dividing that figure by 1,230 means that a single win was valued at $2,949,908.82.We can then turn to ESPN’s Real-Plus Minus and specifically RPM wins, a stat that uses a player’s RPM and his possessions played to estimate his contribution to the number of his team’s wins. Not all players qualified for the RPM leaderboard, so there was a slight shortfall of wins produced by the 514 players who did qualify. We applied a multiplier to each of those player’s totals in order to account for the shortfall. Then, we multiplied the dollar value of a win by the number of adjusted RPM wins each player produced to pinpoint the dollar value of that player’s production. Subtracting his actual 2018-19 salary from that number yields a surplus, meeting our goal of identifying the best bang-for-buck player in the league this season. 13Ben Simmons8.398.9526.416.4319.97 7Danny Green11.6012.3836.5110.0026.51 Pascal Siakam led the NBA in most bang for the buckNBA players by value provided to their teams above their salaries as measured by Real Plus-Minus (RPM) wins, 2018-19 season 10Kemba Walker10.5611.2733.2412.0021.24 16Nikola Jokic14.0114.9544.1024.6119.49 11De’Aaron Fox8.398.9526.415.4720.94 It should come as no surprise that both Antetokounmpo and Harden ranked among the league leaders in both the value of their production and the surplus value they provided their teams. The Rockets received more than $27 million in surplus value on Harden; the Bucks got nearly $23 million in surplus on Antetokounmpo. Neither player, though, led the league in surplus value. Harden ranked sixth, while Antetokounmpo ranked ninth (and second on his own team).3Brook Lopez, who produced $32.77 million in value compared with a paltry $3.38 million salary, held that crown. Fellow MVP candidates George ($30.22 million) and Jokic ($19.49 million) also ranked highly in surplus value, but again, neither of them led the league.4Though George did lead the league with a production value of $60.78 million. Instead, the league leader was do-it-all Raptors forward Pascal Siakam, with a surplus value of nearly $36 million.Siakam is quite good, obviously, but he’s not nearly as good as the MVP types just yet. By any traditional MVP definition, he doesn’t really fit. But we’re not looking for a traditionally defined MVP here — just the player whose value most exceeded his salary. And that’s why Siakam makes perfect sense.Siakam broke out in a huge way this season, emerging as both the favorite for Most Improved Player and a candidate for one of the All-NBA teams. He averaged 16.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.6 combined steals and blocks per game while getting to the line 3.8 times a night and canning 36.9 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. He is a wonderful defender, capable of handling himself both in space and on the block, wreaking havoc in passing lanes and containing ball-handlers off the dribble. He also served as the point man in the Raptors’ league-best zone defense and the one of the primary drivers of their defense-to-offense transition attack. Toronto outscored its opponents by 10.7 points per 100 possessions with Siakam on the floor, per NBA.com, the eighth-best figure among the 353 players who appeared in at least 40 games. He carried the Raptors in several games when Kyle Lowry and/or Kawhi Leonard sat out because of injuries or load management; he was also a rotation mainstay, playing in 80 of 82 games, all but one of which he started. And Siakam did all of this while drawing a salary of just $1,544,951, as a former No. 27 overall pick playing in the third year of his rookie-scale contract. He produced like a star — Siakam ranked 11th in production value per RPM wins — while being paid less than 391 other players in the league. Add it all up, and he produced by far the most surplus value of any player this season, with the difference between him and No. 2 Nikola Vucevic slightly exceeding the difference between Vucevic and No. 7 Danny Green, Siakam’s teammate in Toronto. Considering that neither Siakam nor Green is even Toronto’s best player, it’s no wonder the Raptors are among the favorites to represent the Eastern Conference in this year’s NBA Finals.5Provided they can bounce back against the Magic. If that is indeed how these playoffs play out, Siakam will almost surely have played a valuable role — maybe not the “most valuable” by popular definitions, but one that far exceeds the value of his paycheck. * RPM wins were adjusted to account for players who did not qualify for the RPM leaderboard.Numbers may not add up because of rounding.Sources: ESPN, Basketball-Reference.com 6James Harden18.2619.4857.4730.4327.04 2Nikola Vucevic13.9114.8443.7812.7531.03 12Rudy Gobert13.7914.7143.4023.2420.16 read more

Rice growing into defensive midfield role

first_imgWest Ham United midfielder Declan Rice is relishing playing in central defensive midfield for the Hammers this season. After an impressive pre-season, Rice has established himself in the West Ham team this season under Manuel Pellegrini. The 19-year-old’s frequent involvement in the team also coincided with West Ham’s return to form starting with their 3-1 victory at Everton.“I’d say Everton away was my best performance since I came back in, because we’d lost the first four and we couldn’t lose five in a row,” Rice told the club’s website.“The manager changed the team up and we went out there, everyone played really well, we won our first game and got the three points and there’s no better feeling than that, to be honest.“If you compare the first game I played at Liverpool compared to the ones I’m playing now, my positioning at Anfield wasn’t the best for a holding midfielder.Mason MountRice tips Mount for greater things Taimoor Khan – September 11, 2019 Declan Rice says that Mason Mount is going to match the exploits of Frank Lampard when he was in his prime during his playing…“Positioning is one of the main things when you play in that position because you’ve always got to play in the center of the pitch.“I always look back at that Liverpool game because it was the first time I’d played CDM (central defensive midfielder) in a while and I was not really in the back four, I was wide, and sometimes it’s not about that.“You’ve just got to hold your position and trust that the ball is going to come near you.“I think, since I’ve started to do that, the amount of interceptions and tackles I have made has gone up.”last_img read more
