The Banks DIH Outlet at New Amsterdam has been adjudged top performer among the DIH outlets with a whopping $2.7 billion in sales recorded for 2017.This was announced when the company held its Annual Shareholders’ Meeting on Sunday. The record sales last year saw the New Amsterdam Branch reclaiming the coveted Chairman’s Trophy which is given to the most outstanding branch.New Amsterdam Branch Manager Reginald Mathews had vowed to have it returned to Berbice when he lost it last year.Magistrate Krisondat Persaud collecting from Marketing Director George McDonald a cheque for the Domestic Violence and Counselling CentreAddressing shareholders, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Clifford Reis, acknowledged the efforts of the New Amsterdam Branch and noted that it had sold 1,600,011 items in 2017.Reis said the New Amsterdam Branch made $13.7 million in after-tax profit, which is an increase of $8.5 million over 2016.Demico Quik Serve New Amsterdam was able to contribute $109 million in sales last year.Meanwhile, Citizens Bank New Amsterdam, which is in operation for now a third year, had deposits totalling $392 billion.Reis also noted that the bank had approved loans totalling $64 million.“The shares that you own (are) worth money, and if you go into the bank with your shares, you can borrow money on those shares; and they have a high value,” Reis told the gathering.Last week Monday, the company’s $10.00 shares were being sold on the stock market at $45.10, and by the end of the week, they were selling at $40.00.Half a decade ago, some advocates had been saying that those shares were worth $6.00 while the company was advising shareholders not to sell, Reis said.A section of the gathering at the shareholders meeting in Berbice“If you put $10.00 in the bank five years ago, and you go back tomorrow, you will get back $10.00; you will not get back $11.00. But if you are a shareholder in Banks DIH and you sell those shares tomorrow, you will get $45.00; that is over a 300 percent increase,” he declared. Explaining further, the company’s chairman said, “If you purchase a share and the company paid $1.04 dividend, it means that you are getting about 2.3 percent on your investment tax-free. And if you put the same money in the bank you will get $1.34 interest, and by the time they charge you banking charges, you will get less than one percent back.”Reis noted that Banks DIH was able to weather the effects of an artificial increase in foreign exchange rates, which affected the acquisition cost for raw and packaging materials, machinery spares, and the availability of foreign exchange for the payment of goods and services. The overall effect of reduced export earnings in the agriculture sector affected overall retail sales, Reis said, while noting that the focus for the new financial year is on further investment in solar energy, an initiative which was tested and introduced in 2017 at the company’s Main Street Qik Serv restaurant.Overall, last year the company registered a $4.243 billion after-tax profit.“Shareholders, this was made possible as a result of sales of our malt products, aerated, liquor beverages, and food products. Additionally, further benefits accrued from improved production efficiencies resulting from our capital investment in plants and machinery. The company also benefited from a reduction in prices for several key raw and packaging materials, which include sugar and pre-forms.”Reis said the overall performance by Banks DIL Ltd last year was also because of prudent management of the company’s assets and financial resources.Meanwhile, as is customary, the company presented a cheque to two schools to assist with a project which would benefit current and future children. This year the schools chosen were Black Bush Polder Secondary and Number 48 Primary. The beverage giant also assisted a non-governmental organisation with a monetary contribution. This year the presentation was made to the Domestic Violence and Counselling Centre located at Corriverton.
South Africa is a diverse country, yet most of its people see themselves as South African first, according to Brand South Africa’s latest Domestic Perceptions Research. They also view themselves in a positive light and believe that media is a little too critical about the nation.During the past week Brand South Africa received results from the Domestic Perceptions Research study. This concludes two rounds of fieldwork conducted in the 2015/16 financial year. The research results of the two rounds, consolidated in one report, renders some interesting information about the perceptions South Africans have of the brand, and their outlook for the future. This research update merely reflects on a few issues pertaining to self-description, pride, media consumption and perceptions of how the media reports on issues in the domestic environment. More updates on findings from the domestic research to follow.Self-description labelsBeing a South African is a very important element of individual and national identity. In terms of nationality responses to the survey indicate – “I’m a South African” is the primary descriptive label amongst citizens.Unlike perceptions created through mediated debate, South Africans are extremely proud of the country:Over 80% of South African citizens claim that they are extremely proud to be South African. Citizens are inclined to recommend South Africa across the board, with higher affinity to travel to and live in. The box below indicates, by race, the predominant categories of self-description respondents identify with. From this it is clear that all races identify themselves as South African first, with religion and race in second place, and culture and gender typically third and fourth choices. In order to get more insight on how South Africans describe themselves, an open ended question asked respondents, in five words, to describe themselves, from this it emerges that:People describe themselves in a positive light, focusing on character & personality traits like “loving”, “friendly”, “hardworking”, “respectful” and “honest”.Coincidentally, these self-descriptions match findings from, for example, the Nation Brand Index, and City Brand Index that shows international respondents also describe South Africans as hardworking, open, and friendly people. The images below capture the most common words respondents used to describe themselves. The above self-descriptions can help when speaking about the culture, values, and self-perception of South African people.Media consumption & perceptionsSome general findings from the survey indicate that:It’s top priority among citizens to constantly be informed about happenings in their community and country, as well as supporting local businesses – however when it comes to effort based activities it is deemed as less important.Citizens want easy accessible information provided to them; being most directly influenced by family, friends/ colleagues, followed by mainstream media sources like TV & News radio broadcasts.Having trusted advocates in society that people can learn from and understand – will give more positive outlook about what’s going on in SAThere is consensus that the media portrays more negative than positive information and stories about South Africa. The box below indicates that 62% of respondents think the SA media is too negative about the country. In order to understand the extent to which South Africans trust sources of information, respondents are asked to rate the sources as outlined below.Family, friends & colleagues; TV news; and Radio news are the top three trusted sources of information. Online social networking and related sources of information are the least trusted of all possible sources.Other media consumption factors92% of all respondents own a cell phone;30% of respondents use a laptop;9% of respondents use a tablet.Radio and TelevisionJust over half of the population listen to radio every day with Metro FM, Lesedi FM, and uMhlobo Wenene FM being the most popular radio stations; In terms of television – Movie channels, SABC channels, and Religious channels are the most watched;Documentary and News channels draw about 28% of respondents.Print mediaA quarter of the population read newspapers every day;The Daily Sun is the most read newspaper (34% of respondents read this paper);Other commonly read papers include: Isolezwe (8%); Sunday Times (5%); Beeld (4%); Son (4%); Sowetan (4%); The Citizen (3%).
Virat Kohli’s dream run in ODIs continued as his brilliant century guided India to a comfortable six-wicket victory in the fourth one-dayer against Sri Lanka, thereby clinching the five-match series 3-1, in Colombo on Tuesday.Courtesy’s Kohli’s 119-ball 128 and his partnership of 146 runs with another in-form batsman Suresh Raina (58), India reached the 252-run target in 42.2 overs at the R Premadasa stadium. This is Kohli’s 13th century in his 89th ODI appearance, a feat still unattained by any other batsman in ODI history. The Delhi batsman, on his way to another three-digit figure, also completed quickest 1000 runs in a calender year with a whopping average of 77.15. He has now scored his fifth century in last eight matches. It was Raina who scored the winning run with a hit over extra cover off Tillakaratne Dilshan as India reached 255 for four.Raina’s 51-ball 58 was his 24th half century and eighth against Sri Lanka. Both Kohli and Raina blunted Sri Lanka’s spin attack and batted beautifully. Raina may not be as prolific numbers as Kohli but batting at number 5 and 6, he has more than pulled his weight.India were off to a poor start as pacer Lasith Malinga struck in his first over to bowl out Gautam Gambhir (0).Virender Sehwag along with Kohli put the Indian chase back on track with a 50-run stand for the second wicket but Angelo Mathews got rid of the opener in the 10th over to somewhat derail visitors’ chase.Mathews got Sehwag caught by substitute Senanayake after his fighting knock of 34.advertisement
India won the toss and elected to field first against EnglandWelcome to the coverage of the 5th ODI between India and England from the Headingley cricket ground in Leeds.Scorecard | Match Photos Team India were bowled for 253 runs while chasing an imposing total of 294 runs against England in the 5th ODI at Headingley. The players exchange pleasantries. England finally got their act together to prevent India from sweeping the series. After Root’s ton powered them to a fine total, the English bowlers removed Rahane and Kohli cheaply. Dhawan threatened for a brief while before he was undone by Moeen Ali. The English intensity though nosedived as they dropped a couple of catches. Rayudu got to his fifty but threw it away, instead of setting up an edifice for the force multipliers. Raina had an off-day and so did Dhoni. Meanwhile, Jaddu walloped the hosts all around the park. All it did though was to reduce the margin of defeat. Jimmy and Co. put up a much improved performance. Barring Woakes and Tredwell, all others contributed. Stokes followed up his cameo with the bat with 3 wickets, vindicating his recall. In hindsight, the series could have been more interesting had England engineered such a performance a game or two ago.
