Doctors warn of difficulty distinguishing between flu, COVID-19

He added it’s not impossible for you to experience a loss of smell or taste with the flu, but it’s much less likely. “You’ve probably heard a lot about loss of smell and lost of taste sensation with COVID-19, not that everybody experiences that, but it is a symptom that sort of catches your eye,” Dr. Ryan said.center_img The Broome County Health Department’s medical director Dr. Christopher Ryan told 12 News there is considerable overlap in the symptoms of the seasonal flu, and the far more serious COVID-19 virus. This means people with either virus will display many of the same symptoms, such as cough, fever or sore throat. Dr. Ryan advocated everyone get a flu shot this year, even those who typically don’t, because of the similarity in symptoms.
